WIDE Trust Scholars Flourish at the 2023 ANZIF Conference
The 2023 ANZIF Conference held from October 15 to 18, 2023, proved to be a transformative experience for the four WIDE Trust-sponsored students who attended. Liam Walker, Ryan Doyle, Emma Walters and Nathan Wright had the opportunity to delve into a diverse range of forestry topics, connect with like-minded individuals, and showcase their research to an engaged audience.
The conference theme, "Embracing Our Natural Capital: The Science, Technology, and Art of Managing Forests For All Values," set the stage for an exploration of the multifaceted aspects of forestry. The scholars attended presentations covering biosecurity, farm forestry, carbon forestry, social license, and remote sensing, gaining insights that promise to shape the future of their careers.
Undoubtedly, one of the highlights for our scholars was the Future Foresters Networking Function. At this event, they had the chance to meet young foresters from both New Zealand and Australia. Engaging in spirited discussions, the group tackled the challenges faced by emerging professionals in the field. The exchange of ideas and experiences fostered a sense of camaraderie and a shared commitment to overcoming common obstacles.
The scholars also participated in a captivating field trip to Lamington National Park and the Tallebudgera Valley. Here, they delved into topics such as forest health, fire, resilience, and conservation. A surprising revelation came during this excursion—the controlled use of fires to restore forests to their natural state. The hands-on experience added a practical dimension to the theoretical knowledge gained during the conference.
Our scholars proudly displayed their research through posters showcased throughout the conference. The response was overwhelming, with many attendees expressing interest and engaging in discussions. A crowning achievement for Emma and Nathan was winning joint first place in the NZIF student poster competition, a testament to the relevance and impact of their work.
Overall, the ANZIF Conference provided our scholars with a panoramic view of the forestry landscape. The diverse array of sessions, coupled with networking opportunities, expanded their horizons and deepened their understanding of the challenges and opportunities within the industry. The experience was a pivotal moment in shaping their perspectives on the future of forestry.
The scholars express their gratitude to the WIDE Trust for sponsoring their attendance at the ANZIF Conference. The support provided by the WIDE Trust made this enriching experience possible, allowing these promising individuals to contribute to and benefit from the global discourse on forestry.
As we look forward, the insights gained from the conference will undoubtedly influence the trajectory of these scholars' careers, contributing to the advancement of the forestry and wood industry sectors in New Zealand.
