Celebrating the Mid-Year Achievements of WIDE Trust Grant Recipients

At the WIDE Trust, we are proud to support the educational journeys of dedicated and passionate students pursuing wood or forestry related studies. This mid-year report showcases the progress and experiences of several grant recipients who are making the most of their opportunities. Here are their stories and achievements so far.

Eli Dunn-Stevens: Embracing Practical Learning

Eli Dunn-Stevens, a Bachelor of Forestry Science student at the University of Canterbury, is thriving in his third year with the support of the WIDE Trust. He particularly enjoyed the FORE307 Plantation Silviculture course, which included hands-on field trips to nurseries and plantations. A standout experience was the multi-day trip to St Arnaud, where Eli learned about various aspects of plantation silviculture from leading forestry companies.

Another highlight for Eli was the Fore324 Geospatial Science in Forest Monitoring and Management course. This course involved weekly labs that provided practical experience with ARC GIS Pro, balancing the fieldwork with valuable lab sessions. Eli's enthusiasm for his studies and the support from WIDE Trust have set a strong foundation for his future in forestry.

Maude Rogers: Gaining Professional Experience

Maude Rogers, now in her fourth year of a forestry science degree, has found her studies both challenging and rewarding. Her case study focused on the Nelson and Marlborough regions, providing practical experience working as a consultant. This hands-on project allowed her to apply the knowledge gained throughout her degree to real-world scenarios.

Maude's summer internship with Scion Research centered on the reproductive habits of Pinus contorta, one of the most problematic wilding pine species. This work has evolved into her honors project, where she is developing a statistical model to estimate seed production and predict future spread. Maude's gratitude for the WIDE Trust's support is evident as she looks forward to a fulfilling career in environmental forestry.

Maggie Crawford: Overcoming Challenges and Embracing New Experiences

Maggie Crawford, a second-year forestry science student, has had a semester filled with challenges and growth. Despite finding some courses difficult, she persevered and found joy in the field trips and hands-on learning experiences. The unexpected cancellation of the Westport Biology Field Trip led to an alternative trip from Arthur's Pass to Akaroa, where Maggie learned about native flora and fauna.

In addition to her studies, Maggie held two research assistant roles, measuring trees in Rolleston and urban areas. These experiences enriched her understanding of forestry and its environmental benefits. Maggie's appreciation for the WIDE Trust's scholarship is heartfelt, as it has allowed her to focus fully on her studies and university life.

Cruz Dawson: Exploring Native Forests and Practical Applications

Cruz Dawson, who is enjoying his second year of study with numerous field trips and lab experiences, has developed a deep appreciation for the complexities of native forests. Coming from a rural background, he found the lectures on invertebrates and native fauna particularly fascinating.

Cruz's key learnings include understanding pest and disease management techniques and the harvest planning process. These experiences have provided him with practical knowledge that will be invaluable in his future career. Cruz is grateful for the WIDE Trust's generosity, which has enabled him to focus on his studies and make the most of his university experience.

Supporting The Next Generation

The WIDE Trust is committed to supporting the next generation of forestry professionals. We are inspired by the dedication and achievements of students like Eli, Maude, Maggie, and Cruz. Their stories highlight the importance of practical learning, professional experience, and perseverance.

As we continue to support these bright minds, we look forward to seeing their contributions to the wood and forestry industries in New Zealand.
