Hannah Munro Believes she Landed on her Feet with Studying Forestry

Whenever a student tells the WIDE Trust something like this, it makes all the mahi worth it.

Hannah Munro is one of the trust’s many success stories. As is often heard, she hadn’t even considered a Bachelor of Forestry Science in the early years of High school.

However, as she grew to love science and the outdoors, a potential career in forestry revealed itself to her. Hannah applied for a scholarship on the WIDE Trust’s website and things moved quickly from there. She’s now in her final year of her Bachelors and absolutely loving it. Especially when she realised art, her other passion, has a place in Forestry too.

She’s even started working towards further qualifications in forestry science. During the University’s summer holidays, students are given the opportunity to gain practical work experience all over the country. Hannah says she “…assisted with the development of the new management plan for Port Marlborough’s Shakespeare Bay forest. This project has now become my Honour’s dissertation focus.” Specifically, she’s focused on native regeneration in Eucalyptus stands.

The future of forestry in New Zealand is a whole lot brighter when young people like Hannah are given the chance to it. The WIDE Trust’s funding to Hannah is just the means. She has found her own purpose and an “extended whanau and friends with similar interests from all over the country.”
